What to know about USAA personal loans
USAA personal loans are offered by USAA Federal Savings Bank, a members-only bank that’s open to active-duty and former military, as well as their families.
If you qualify for membership, I’d say USAA personal loans are definitely worth a look for a wide range of financing needs. Loan amounts are as high as $100,000, which is among the highest we see across lenders. And repayment terms range from one to seven years, though terms of four years and longer require larger loans.
USAA loans stand out for several flexible features, including adjustable payment dates and help for borrowers who are struggling. You can change your payment dates twice during the life of the loan. And the lender says it offers accommodations to members experiencing financial hardship in situations like a natural disaster or a government shutdown. It’s fairly common that lenders are willing to work with borrowers who are facing hardship, but the options can be different from lender to lender.
One downside I see to USAA loans, though, is that borrowers can’t pre-qualify for a loan with a soft credit check. To view offers, you’ll need to complete the application and undergo a hard credit check, which can temporarily lower your credit score.
On top of not offering the pre-qualification step, USAA doesn’t publicly disclose many details about its credit requirements, including its minimum credit score and maximum debt-to-income ratio. The combination makes rate shopping and comparisons more complicated.
Borrowers who have less-than-perfect credit and aren’t sure whether they’ll qualify may want to consider a lender that offers pre-qualification with a soft credit check and greater transparency about its approval criteria.

What we like most about USAA
- Wide range of loan amounts and repayment terms: USAA offers personal loans from $2,500 to $100,000, with repayment terms ranging from one to seven years. The broad range of loan amounts and repayment terms make USAA a good choice for everything from a small loan in an emergency to consolidating debt or financing a major expense, like a home improvement project. Only a few of the lenders we review offer higher limits, including Navy Federal which also lends to military members and their families. Generally, lenders that have the higher borrowing limits have a similar range of repayment terms. With USAA, longer repayment terms are reserved for larger loans. Four-year repayment terms have a minimum loan amount of $5,000, while loans with 5-, 6- and 7-year terms have minimum amounts of $10,000, $15,000 and $20,000, respectively.
- No origination fee: Unlike some lenders, USAA doesn’t charge an origination fee for its personal loans. This one-time fee can run as high as 10% of the loan amount. It’s typically deducted from loan funds, meaning customers often receive less money than they borrowed. USAA personal loan borrowers don’t have this extra cost.
- Choice of payment date: USAA gives members the flexibility to choose their payment date, which can be helpful if you’re trying to sync loan payments with your payday or avoid having too many bills due at once. And while you can adjust the date two times — by up to 15 days — you can only move it forward and not backward. Many lenders we’ve reviewed allow borrowers to choose or change their date. A number of others allow only a date change. There are some that don’t offer either option.
- Option to add co-borrower: USAA allows you to apply for a loan with a co-borrower who shares access to loan funds and the responsibility for repayment. Adding a co-borrower with good credit and low debt levels can often help applicants get approved for a loan they wouldn’t qualify for on their own. About a third of the lenders we’ve reviewed offer the option to add a co-borrower.
- Fast funding: USAA personal loans offer fast funding, with loan proceeds typically available the next business day with direct deposit. While many online lenders have same- or next-day funding, some banks and credit unions can take up to a week to fund your loan.
Why USAA may not be right for you
- Not everyone can be a member: You’ll need to join USAA to apply for a personal loan, and membership is generally limited to military members and their families.
- No option to pre-qualify: Unlike most lenders, USAA doesn’t allow borrowers to pre-qualify for a loan with a soft credit check. To find out if you qualify for a loan and receive a personalized rate, you’ll need to submit an application, which requires a hard credit check. Many other lenders allow you to see your estimated loan amount, annual percentage rate, monthly payment and repayment term with a soft credit check, which doesn’t affect your credit score.
- No option to add co-signer: While USAA allows you to add a co-borrower to your application, the lender doesn’t offer co-signed loans. A loan co-signer doesn’t have access to loan funds but agrees to be responsible if the primary borrower doesn’t make payments. Adding a co-signer can boost your odds of approval for a loan or help you qualify for better terms if you have fair or bad credit.
- No secured loans: Some lenders allow borrowers to secure their loans with collateral, like a savings account or vehicle, but USAA doesn’t offer secured personal loans. Adding collateral to a loan application can help borrowers qualify for a loan they might not otherwise be eligible for based on their credit profile.
