What to know about Oportun personal loans

Oportun is an online and storefront lender that offers personal loans to applicants across the credit spectrum. If you have bad credit or limited credit history, Oportun is a better choice than a high-interest lender. High-interest lenders tend to charge triple-digit interest rates, which make their loans extremely difficult to repay.

Oportun stands out for being a federally certified community development financial institution. This means it works to increase economic opportunity in low-income communities. The lender offers free financial education on its website and a money savings app for a small monthly fee.

Its personal loans are especially flexible, and you’ll have a wide range of repayment options to choose from. You can even secure the loan with your personal vehicle, which usually helps you qualify for a lower rate.

You’ll have to be patient with funding time, though. Oportun loan funds can take up to four days to reach your bank account.

What we like most about Oportun

  • Small loans available: An Oportun loan can be as little as $300, which is lower than most lenders we reviewed. These loans can be used for small but necessary emergency expenses, like a dental procedure or auto repair. This low minimum makes Oportun an affordable alternative to payday loans, which also tend to offer smaller amounts.
  • Offers co-signed, joint and secured loan options: If you don’t qualify for an Oportun loan on your own, you can add a co-borrower or co-signer. Ideally this person has a higher credit score and larger income than you, which helps increase approval odds. Securing the loan with a paid-off vehicle can also increase your chances of getting approved. The maximum loan amount is $18,500 for a secured loan. However, only borrowers in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Texas and Utah can get a secured personal loan through Oportun.
  • Options to choose and change your payment date: Before signing a loan agreement, Oportun allows you to choose your payment date. You can also change your payment date multiple times throughout the life of the loan. This flexibility is especially important if you have a big change in your pay schedule or an unexpected expense one month.

Why Oportun may not be right for you

  • High starting APR compared to other lenders: Oportun’s annual percentage rates start around 19%. This is significantly higher compared to other online lenders, whose APRs mostly start below 10%. A rate below 20% may still be a competitive offer if you have bad credit, but if you have good or excellent credit (a 690 credit score or higher), you should look elsewhere.
  • Charges an origination fee: Oportun may charge an origination fee that’s up to 10% of the loan amount, depending on the loan size and repayment term length. Oportun takes this fee from the loan before sending the funds to your account, reducing the amount you receive. While origination fees are hard to avoid from online lenders, it increases your overall loan cost.
  • No rate discount: Oportun doesn’t discount rates, which reduce the cost of borrowing. Other lenders offer rate discounts for borrowers who enroll in automatic payments or opt to have their loan proceeds sent directly to their creditors when consolidating debt.
