AIR MILES Credit Cards in Canada: 2026 Update
Update (Jan. 2026): BMO AIR MILES cards are closed to new applicants.
BMO is transitioning AIR MILES to Blue Rewards, launching in summer 2026. Existing cardholders can keep using their BMO AIR MILES debit and credit cards, and AIR MILES balances will automatically convert to Blue Points at equivalent value when Blue Rewards launches.

Can you still apply for an AIR MILES credit card?
At this time, no new AIR MILES credit cards are available to apply for in Canada.
BMO, the issuer of AIR MILES credit cards, has stopped accepting new applications as it prepares to transition the AIR MILES loyalty program to Blue Rewards. Instead of new AIR MILES cards, BMO is directing prospective customers to sign up for updates about upcoming Blue Rewards credit cards.
If you already have a BMO AIR MILES credit card, you can continue using it during the transition period.

What existing AIR MILES cardholders should know
If you currently hold a BMO AIR MILES credit card, there will be no immediate changes to your account.
Otherwise, here’s what to expect:
Your card continues to work: You can keep using your current BMO AIR MILES credit card as you normally would.
Automatic rewards conversion: When Blue Rewards launches in summer 2026, your existing AIR MILES balance will automatically convert to Blue Points at an equivalent value. No action is required.
What to do instead if you want a new rewards credit card
Since AIR MILES credit cards are closed to new applicants, here are your main options if you’re shopping for a new rewards card now.
1. Join the Blue Rewards credit card waitlist
BMO has confirmed that a new lineup of Blue Rewards credit cards is coming with the launch of the program. If you’re interested in staying within the BMO ecosystem, joining the waitlist is the most direct path to future AIR MILES–style rewards.
2. Consider flexible travel rewards credit cards
If your goal is travel rewards — not necessarily AIR MILES specifically — a flexible travel credit card can offer:
Broader redemption options.
The ability to redeem points for flights, hotels or statement credits.
Less dependence on a single loyalty program.
These cards are often a good fit while waiting for Blue Rewards cards to become available.
3. Look at airline rewards credit cards
If you primarily redeem rewards for flights, airline-specific credit cards may be a better match. These cards typically earn points directly with a specific airline and can come with perks like priority boarding or free checked bags.
Programs like Aeroplan can be a better fit if you mainly redeem for flights and want more airline-specific redemption options. See our recommendations for the best Aeroplan credit cards.
4. Consider points you can redeem broadly
If you want simple, flexible rewards, consider rewards credit cards that earn points you can redeem broadly. These cards tend to be easiest if you want to use rewards for travel, statement credits, or a range of redemption options without being tied to one loyalty program.
5. Consider retail rewards programs
Retail-focused rewards programs such as Scene+ or PC Optimum can be a good fit if you mainly redeem rewards for everyday spending, groceries or entertainment rather than travel. See our picks for the best store credit cards in Canada.
