U.S. Bank Merchant Services Review: Quick Deposits, but Expect Extra Fees
U.S. Bank Merchant Services combines banking and payment processing for a more holistic payments option. Just be aware of added fees for things like setup and recurring invoicing.

U.S. Bank Merchant Services
The bottom line:
U.S. Bank Merchant Services stands out because it doubles as a bank. This translates into quicker deposits and a more tailored user experience. For example, each business gets its own dedicated account manager and merchant account. And if there’s a physical branch in your area, you can speak with representatives in-person. Fintech companies, like Square, are often more modernized and convenient. But they struggle to match this level of personalization.

Pros & Cons
Pros
Has a free mobile POS plan.
Same-day funding seven days per week for U.S. Bank checking account holders.
24/7 support, plus a dedicated account manager.
Provides dedicated merchant accounts.
Cons
Standard and Premium plans charge a $99 setup fee.
Has a three-year contract (but no cancellation fees).
Charges extra for virtual terminal and e-commerce plans.
Chase Payment Solutions: Better for processing efficiency. U.S. Bank Merchant Services uses Elavon to process payments in-house. As a direct processor, Chase takes in-house processing a step further — it’s in charge of the entire processing system. That means it should be able to troubleshoot processing issues more efficiently. Read our full Chase Payment Solutions review.
Stripe: Better for online transactions. Stripe specializes in processing online transactions around the world. You can use it to build your own online checkout flow or opt for a plug-and-play version. Plus, its software is free. U.S. Bank Merchant Services has e-commerce plans, but they cost extra. Read our full Stripe review.
Finix: Better for high-volume businesses. Unlike U.S. Bank Merchant Services, Finix charges a monthly payment processing fee in exchange for lower transaction rates. This seems expensive upfront, but it can help high-volume businesses (e.g., those doing at least $10,000 per month in sales) save in the long run. Read our full Finix review.
Full review
U.S. Bank Merchant Services is a merchant services provider and business banking solution. It uses Elavon, a subsidiary of the institution, to process payments. And it sells POS systems from Talech. It’s a good fit for retailers, restaurants and service-based businesses looking for a more individualized payments experience.
Competitors like Square, PayPal and Stripe aggregate multiple businesses’ funds into one account. U.S. Bank Merchant Services provides individual, dedicated accounts to each business instead.
Opening an individual account is often more time consuming than using an aggregated one. But it ensures your business is a good fit for the product and reduces the risk of account freezes. It may also give you the option to negotiate pricing if you’re a high-volume business.
U.S. Bank Merchant Services is especially convenient for business owners who already use the bank’s business checking account. Since your funds stay under the same roof, you can get access to them as soon as the same day. Processors that don’t double as banks can take up to three days to transfer your funds.
If you’re trying to start accepting payments immediately, U.S. Bank Merchant Services isn’t the best product. You’re better off opting for a payment aggregator, like Square or PayPal. The customer support may not be as personalized, but setup is straightforward and there are no hidden fees.
U.S. Bank Merchant Services is best for:
✔️ Businesses that already have accounts with U.S. Bank.
Processing payments through your bank (or one of its subsidiaries) can streamline deposits. This, in turn, bolsters your business’s cash flow.
U.S. Bank Merchant Services offers free same-day deposits to business owners with a U.S. Bank business checking account. And you can access them every day of the week, including weekends and holidays. Competitors, like PayPal, don’t guarantee next-day deposits. Instead, some merchants wait up to three business days to access their funds. Additionally, most alternatives only deposit funds into your account on business days.
💬 From our Nerds: Should you get a U.S. Bank business checking account?
"U.S. Bank is a rarity among brick-and-mortar banks. It offers a business checking account with no monthly maintenance fee. That means opening an account has little downside, especially since the upside is faster access to funds.
"The account isn’t perfect, though. Its additional fees — for overdrafts, wires and out-of-network ATMs — are high compared to other free business checking accounts. Plus, cash deposit limits are relatively low.
"Those constraints may make U.S. Bank a tough everyday fit for your business. But you can always open a U.S. Bank account as a way station for your payments and use a second account for other transactions."
— Ryan Lane, managing editor covering small business
24/7 support
If your payment processing system is down or you run into an issue, you risk having to pause sales. Access to 24/7 support can be a game changer for businesses that stay open late and/or are busiest on weekends.
U.S. Bank Merchant Services also matches each business with its own dedicated account manager. This direct line of communication ideally gives you quicker access to assistance.
Where U.S. Bank Merchant Services falls short
Some setups are quote-based
U.S. Bank Merchant Services isn’t transparent about how much its POS register setups cost. This is poor form for a payment processor. That's mostly because it makes it difficult to compare pricing across solutions.
POS register setups might vary in price depending on your specific needs. That’s fair. But U.S. Bank Merchant Services should at least provide a price range so you don't need to call a representative.
Has more add-on fees than the competition
U.S. Bank Merchant Services charges extra for virtual terminal access, recurring invoicing, e-commerce plans and register setup. Square, in comparison, doesn’t charge extra for any of these things — even in its free plan.
The bank’s site also doesn’t disclose whether there are monthly PCI compliance fees. And you won’t find information about how much chargebacks cost either. These aren’t the absolute most important costs — they’re usually small. But they still matter if you’re trying to predict monthly payment expenses.
What small-business owners think of U.S. Bank Merchant Services
I checked online forums like Reddit and reviews from sites like TrustPilot, G2, the App Store and Google Play to gauge how users feel about U.S. Bank Merchant Services. There was limited feedback about this product, so I also considered reviews of Elavon, its payment processing subsidiary. Then I used an AI tool to help analyze this feedback. Here are the major trends I spotted.
👍 Local support
Online Reddit commenters appreciate that U.S. Bank Merchant Services has brick-and-mortar locations in certain areas. This is definitely something that sets it apart from most of its non-bank competitors. If you prefer to speak face-to-face with a representative instead of waiting on hold, this product could be for you.
Local representatives may also have a better idea of which other bank products you could qualify for or benefit from. That could include loans or lines of credit.

👎 Surprise fees
Negative reviews of Elavon (the company U.S. Bank Merchant Services uses to process payments) often mention getting hit with unexpected fees. This makes sense, considering U.S. Bank doesn’t disclose some of the fees users complain about. Online commenters mention PCI compliance and general merchant account fees in particular.
If you want to use U.S. Bank Merchant Services, ask for an itemized quote in writing before applying for an account. Ask specifically whether there are PCI compliance fees (assuming you’re compliant) or any recurring account maintenance costs.
How we evaluated U.S. Bank Merchant Services
NerdWallet’s writers and editors independently review payment processing solutions, like U.S. Bank Merchant Services, by analyzing more than 30 data points. I also collected data from U.S. Bank’s public-facing website, help articles and company representatives.
I looked through individual reviews and feedback on sites like Trustpilot, the App Store, Google Play and Reddit as well. Then I used AI tools to help spot larger trends within those comments.
Since our team cannot verify each user’s individual experience, we don’t incorporate user reviews in our star ratings. For more information on how we score POS systems, see our full methodology.
Methodology
NerdWallet independently reviews payment processing companies before determining our top picks. We collect the data for our software ratings from products’ public-facing websites and from company representatives. Our editorial team reviews information on a regular basis for consistency and accuracy.
We also periodically update our scoring system to reflect changing industry norms and business needs. For instance, in 2026, we dropped the “free trials” category from our rubric. Payment processing systems can be time-consuming to set up. Testing out multiple products isn’t an ideal approach. Instead, we recommend taking cost and features into consideration.
NerdWallet’s ratings of payment processing providers rewards companies whose products and services are priced well and work in a variety of payment scenarios, among other criteria.
Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including overall cost, hardware and software options, system capabilities, customer service, contract requirements and integrations. Learn more about how we rate payment processing providers.
These ratings are a guide, but fees, hardware, software and contract requirements can vary widely from business to business and provider to provider. We encourage you to shop around and compare several providers.
